Manila's IT Girls: The Gold Standard For Beauty?

As Irish novelist Margaret Hungerford once said, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" (Molly Baum, 1878). Though true beauty lies in the heart and soul of a person, sometimes that popular saying is true. And whenever I read or hear about this famous idiom, it reminds me of someone. Not one, not two, not even three, but six beautiful women that is currently taking over the Philippines by storm (I think so).

I am talking about the famous sisterhood known as the Manila's IT girls. Anne Curtis, Georgina Wilson, Solenn Heussaff, Isabelle Daza, Liz Uy and Bea Soriano. Because of their fame in their respective fields, I began to wonder if these women were the new standard for beauty.

ANNE CURTIS (pictured center)

Probably the most popular of the supreme six. She was popular in virtually all fields: an actress, model, television host, singer, fashion icon, and VJ.

I sometimes ask myself, what is the secret of Anne's success in showbusiness that she was popular in almost every field? Was it her charisma? Those tantalizing eyes and pouting lips that make men having a crush on her? Well probably that's one of the main reasons. Her beauty was so exceptional she was a perfect choice for TV series, movies, and commercials. Her acting skills was so great she had numerous acting awards, such as Best Actress and Box-Office Queen, given to her by numerous award-giving bodies.

Was it because of her funny nature? Despite her fame she was savoring she did not forget where she came from. Her humble beginnings in Australia and the Philippines molded her personality, that's why she is also a choice in comedy, as well as drama. She can adapt to whatever role she was given of, and that makes her a professional. Her recurring running gag, that is, her "out-of-tone" voice, makes her more popular to the masses. But hey, she was out of tone when she sings songs with high notes. If I would gonna have a chance to meet her someday, I will let her sing songs that do not need high notes. She would sing that song perfectly, I tell you.

GEORGINA WILSON (pictured second to right)

Probably the most sophisticated of the six. This Filipina-British model, host and VJ is no pushover. Especially in brains. In her high school years in Assumption College her lowest score is 91. Her highest was 95 or 96... And that's Math!!! Because of that she was transferred to the Math Enrichment Program.

Because of her love for mathematics, in her college days she discovered Economics, and she was accepted in the Economics-Honors course in Ateneo. Later she transferred to University of Sydney and finished it with flying colors with a bachelor's degree in commerce with a double major in accounting and finance. Take that!!!

As for me, I am looking forward to see her act in a TV series or movie.

SOLENN HEUSSAFF (pictured far left)

Undoubtedly the multi-talented one. She is for me the female version of Jose Rizal or Leonardo da Vinci in terms of numerous talents, as she is a VJ, actress, TV Host, model, singer, fashion designer, painter, and professional make-up artist. What more can you ask for?

The second child of Cynthia Adea and Louis Paul Heussaff (a former French Marine of Breton descent, who is now the head of a service company for the petroleum industry), and sister of Vanessa and Erwan, Solenn went on to study fashion design in Studio Berçot, Paris for three years, after graduating from Eurocampus (European International School of Manila). She also took a 6-month course in basic beauty/fashion make-up, body painting, and prosthetics at Ecole Fleurimont, Paris. She then proceeded further studies at the Make Up Forever Academy.

With her French bloodline, she is a perfect choice for advertisements and commercials in and out of the country. And with her skills as a make-up artist, she is also a good choice by movie and TV productions, as well as modeling agencies to render her services.

Multi-talented indeed.

ISABELLE DAZA (pictured second to left)

The daughter of 1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz and restaurateur Gabriel "Bong" Daza, Belle is the one who will continue the legend made by her parents. As an actress, print, ramp, and commercial model, she made a name in her own right.

As a little girl, Belle did not have the conventional looks society expected from a Miss Universe's daughter. Young pictures showed a boyish Belle with curly hair, wearing big glasses and braces. She was more athletic and viewed herself as boyish and more of a tomboy than as a beauty queen.

Before formally beginning her modelling career, she participated in a lot of sporting events and was always a member of her school's football varsity team. Belle also did a lot of stage acting. As a child she took up horseback riding and was training to be an equestrienne. As she grew up, Belle's athleticism and boyishness mellowed and she began to develop her more “feminine” and “fashion-conscious” side when she was offered her first official modelling stint.

Belle used to act as extras in her mother's movies. It was only until Ben Chan (owner of Bench/) offered Belle an endorsement contract for her first formal exposure to modelling.

Despite her modelling contracts and endorsements, Belle continued to pursue her education and initial dream career. After graduating from her baccalaureate degree, she worked as a preschool teacher.

Wow.

I have two "what-ifs" for her. First, if someone would do a remake of the movie "Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop Sa Balat Ng Lupa," which rose her mother to stardom, would the role be perfect for her?

Second, since her father's side had a legacy in culinary arts, and she herself had culinary skills, will she be a perfect host if someone plans to revive the famous cooking show "Cooking with the Dazas" that made her grandmom (Nora Daza), uncle (Sandy Daza) and aunt (Nina Daza-Puyat) so famous? If that's so, then the memorable theme song of the show would be revived as well, that is, "Invitations" by Shakatak.

LIZ UY (pictured far right)

Despite her past relationships with John Lloyd Cruz and even the President himself, Lizzie Uy never backs down, overcoming the odds. As celebrity stylist and fashion editor-at-large, she is the expert in terms of fashion and lifestyle. But despite being in the fashion scene, She has a degree in Hotel Restaurant and Institution Management from College of Saint Benilde. Very far from her forte, though, but I can relate to her. I finished my Bachelor's degree in Information Technology but had a career in Shipping and Logistics... and admin for Stunning Facts.

I and Lizzie had one thing in common, and that is passion for writing. She writes fashion and lifestyle, I write novels and essays. And not just her, even her brother Vince and sister Laureen had a passion for writing, too. And she is a good product endorser as well. Like the other girls in the sisterhood, she is a perfect choice, too.

BEA SORIANO (not shown)

And let's not forget the one who is famous in the fashion scene but unknown to the common people.

For those who don't know, Bea Soriano is a print, ramp, and commercial model. A member of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP), she is one of the long-time faces endorsing Penshoppe.

Despite her relatively low-profile presence, Soriano can constantly be seen in the inner circles of A-list personalities like her five friends, as well as Tim Yap and Raymond Gutierrez. Contented with modeling, she has no plans to follow most of her circle's high-profile friends into showbiz. But if she does, she is certainly a "force to be reckoned with."

Now back to the question. Does the IT Girls be considered the Gold Standard for beauty?
